The Road to Hue (April 03)

Having left Hulong Bay in northern Vietnam, our next port call was Hue in central Vietnam.

The port is about a (often terrifying) 90 minute drive from Hue. The road is Route 1. It is the main thoroughfare in Vietnam, extending from Ho Chi Minh City in the south to Hanoi in the north. At least the section we traveled is one lane each way. The paving ranges from barely acceptable to "How can anyone call this road paved?". It is clogged with traffic. Passing another vehicle while negotiating a blind hairpin turn is apparently fine as long as you blow you loud air horn. Likewise turning out into a road with rapidly approaching traffic is common practice, even when the traffic is coming from both directions. Motorbikes, bicycles and pedestrians are another reason to blow the air horn, the alternative of slowing down being unthinkable.

We soon concluded it was less stressful to look out the side windows at the rice fields...

...inlets, fish traps and canals...

...water buffalo...

...and "buffalo boys."

Eventually, we arrived in Hue.
